Africa’s digital transformation is accelerating — yet millions remain offline due to a critical bottleneck: unreliable power supply.
Across Africa, a large number of telecom sites operate in weak-grid or off-grid areas and have long relied on diesel generators for power. The key challenges include:
Rising fuel costs
Difficult fuel logistics in remote regions
Requent diesel theft and equipment vandalism
High maintenance and operational expenses
Growing pressure to reduce carbon emissions
Today, roughly 70% of over 500,000 telecom towers across Africa remain dependent on diesel for power, driving high operational costs and limiting digital competitiveness. In some remote areas, diesel accounts for 30% to 60% of a tower’s operational costs.
The challenge is intensifying:
5G networks are expected to accelerate tower densification and increase energy consumption per site significantly;
60% to 80% of towers in sub-Saharan Africa face 8-12 hours of daily grid outages;
Diesel costs have surged 40% to 60% in many African markets in recent years;
Nigeria’s telecom operators alone consume up to 40 million liters of diesel monthly — costing the industry approximately $350 million annually;
This diesel-dependent model is unsustainable. Operators need a better way.
Across Africa, governments are prioritizing digital inclusion. Nigeria, for example, has launched a major rural connectivity initiative supported by Chinese financial institutions, aiming to connect 20 million unconnected Nigerians via large-scale green telecom infrastructure.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and Rural Electrification Agency (REA) are jointly promoting clean energy for telecom towers, linking digital access with reliable, green power. Similar initiatives are expanding across the continent.
Demand for clean, reliable, cost-effective off-grid/weak-grid power has never been higher.
1. Reduces Diesel Dependence
Hybrid solutions using clean energy can reduce energy expenditures by 20% to 40% while enhancing reliability. By replacing diesel with LNG-based power generation, operators can achieve lower fuel costs and more predictable operating expenses — without the environmental penalties of diesel.
2. Lowers Total Cost of Ownership
LNG prices are more stable than diesel, and can be delivered via cryogenic tankers. On-site storage tanks ensure continuous operation even in remote areas.
3. Enables Digital Growth
Future data centers and 5G networks demand power capacities that current national grids are unable to provide. CIMC Enric’s modular distributed energy systems cover from 22kW telecom sites to 20MW / 50MW containerized power plant configurations — with dedicated solutions for each application size.
4. Meets ESG & Regulatory Requirements
As governments increasingly mandate carbon reduction, the transition away from diesel-only power for digital infrastructure is becoming a regulatory requirement. CIMC Enric’s LNG solutions significantly reduce emissions while maintaining reliable power output.
CIMC Enric offers a full portfolio of LNG-based distributed energy systems, purpose-built for African operating conditions. Our solutions address core pain points: weak grids, fuel supply difficulties, high diesel costs, and growing ESG pressure.
