There are three main types of LNG storage tanks: single vessel, double vessel or full vessel.
Single vessel LNG storage tank systems consist of an internal vessel and an external vessel. The inner vessel is designed to hold the liquid and is liquid tight. The outer vessel is designed for product vapour pressure. It retains and protects the insulation, but does not contain the liquid if the inner vessel leaks.
The double vessel system has a liquid and vapour tight main LNG storage tank system. The system is built into a liquid-tight secondary vessel. This second liquid vessel is liquid-tight but not vapour-tight.
Finally, a complete hermetic system consists of a liquid-tight primary LNG storage tank and a liquid-tight and vapour-tight secondary vessel. Both can contain products independently. The secondary vessel controls the vapour release in the event of leakage of the primary product.
